Frames - Suggested Sources

Poster sized frames are commonly available from around $10 (simple plastic border) to $15 (metal borders) to $25 (wooden border).  Because frames are fragile and expensive to ship, and because they are available locally in most places, we do not ordinarily supply them.  If you want to locate an on-line source anyway, we suggest you go to a good search engine like dogpile.com, and search on various keywords such as "poster frame" or "metal frame," etc.  One source with a selection of poster and metal sectional frames we found this way is TheFramePlace.com, but we haven't used them and can't exactly recommend them.  For metal sectionals see PictureFrame USA.  For ultra-cheap poster hangers see FramePlace.  There are too many full-service custom frame shops on the web to begin to list them here.

Below are some local sources we have found for nice looking, inexpensive frames that fit our standard sizes.  These we have used and do recommend.  While all these stores have online shops, unfortunately as of this writing none of them list the larger frames!  Probably this is because of the same shipping difficulty that we face ourselves.

Michael's (a craft store national chain) has a wide selection of pre-packaged, semi-custom and custom frames.  They have the standard cheap plastic poster frames starting at under $10, and some very attractive wooden frames for the popular 12x36 size for only $22.  Selection may vary from store to store.  Actually, many of their 12x36 frames are really 11 3/4 x 36.  Probably the print will fit OK, otherwise you just have to trim off an additional 1/4".

Target, a national discount/department store chain, has some very nice looking black metal frames under their in-house Furio brand, which give the print more depth, and cost only a couple dollars more than the low end plastic border poster frames.  These are our favorite frames for this reason.

Garden Ridge Pottery is probably only a Texas chain, but look for a similar home decor discount store in your area.  These stores typically have a huge ready-made frames & prints department. The selection may vary, and you may have to walk around a while to find all the various frames in your size.  We found some very inexpensive gold and silver metal frames in our sizes, then when we went back the selection was not as good on another day (just typical of this kind of store).

All the frames recommended above have clear acrylic faces, which protect your print and add gloss without the weight and fragility of glass.  Another possible option is to dry mount your print and either hang it un-framed, or build your own frame out of small pieces of wooden trim.  We have done this also.  Just put little recessed tabs inside the frame for the mounted print to rest on.  Mounting large prints can be expensive.  You can also do this yourself with a flat piece of poster board and some spray adhesive designed for this purpose.  Beware of two problems - first, with any mounting, curving or warping with time and humidity cannot be corrected.  Second, if you do-it-yourself and ruin your print, our guarantee does not cover this!
